Study - Investors invest record sums in German start-ups

Frankfurt (Reuters) - According to a study, investors have invested more venture capital in German start-ups in 2019 than ever before.  The young companies collected a total of 3.2 billion euros - 38 percent more than the year before, according to data provider Refinitiv. The trend was towards larger cash injections.

The largest amount of money was collected by the Mainz-based biotech company BioNTech, which received 290 million euros last summer. In autumn, the company went public on the US Nasdaq stock exchange. Celonis followed in second place with 262 million euros.  According to Refinitiv, the Berlin smartphone bank N26 came in third with 260 million euros.

2019 was also a record year for new venture capital in Europe. The financing volume rose by 50 percent to 23.5 billion euros. British start-ups received the most money with 9.7 billion euros, followed by French companies with 4.9 billion euros. German companies ranked in third place.
